A Record Season for Cruises in Baie-Comeau!

Baie-Comeau, November 21, 2018 – The cruise industry in Baie-Comeau set a new record for its 12th year of operation, with a total of 17 stopovers between May 27 to November 2, 2018. This is the longest cruise season to date. No less than 11 ships and 10 cruise lines visited us, reaching a total of 80 stopovers with the last ship of the season.

We marked the inaugural stopover for five ships, namely the CTMA Vacancier, Marco Polo, Silver Wind and Spirit, not to mention the majestic Disney Magic. The long-awaited September 25 and 30 calls were very successful.

Despite four cancellations, the cruise season ended on a positive note for Baie-Comeau with the visit of more than 15,000 passengers and crew members, representing nearly three times the total number of visitors welcomed last year.

Ms. Viviane Richard, President of Baie-Comeau Cruises, is extremely satisfied with the 2018 season and warmly thanks all staff for the logistics and the welcome on the pier, at the Cruise Pavilion and on Place LaSalle. She would also like to thank the guides who, as always, did an exceptional job and all the staff and volunteers for the attractions visited during the stopovers.

In keeping with its hospitality policy, Baie-Comeau Cruises continues to invest in improving the experience offered to cruise passengers. The innovations in 2018 included, among others, hiring new guides and reception staff, acquiring a new bridge system for large vessels, installing the giant megaphones in the Parc des pionniers, enhancing the outdoor waiting area of the Carrefour-Maritime, introducing a bicycle rental service and improving the boutique adjacent to the Tourist Information Office.

Optimizing Collaboration with the Community

The support and collaboration of the tourism attractions managers, merchants and our partners ensure that year after year, we continue to improve our tourism offer and its quality. Furthermore, a training course on the international cruise industry was provided during a pre-season meeting held by Baie-Comeau Cruises for tourist and commercial attractions in Manicouagan. Presented by the Cruise the St. Lawrence Association, the video capsules aim not only to provide a better understanding of cruises, but above all to offer better service to those visiting our beautiful regions. Participants received an electrostatic sticker attesting to their certification, to be proudly displayed at the entrance of their establishment.

Fam Tour

Last October, Baie-Comeau Cruises welcomed two representatives from the Zegrahm Expeditions cruise company. A familiarization tour was organised to introduce them to the destination through a personalized visit of the main tourist attractions. Jean-Philippe Messier, founder and director of the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve, was also invited to promote this unique and fascinating territory, including activities related to the Uapishka Research Station and the tourist offer surrounding the Groulx Mountains.

Tourism Growth

This increase means we must align ourselves with our regional tourism partners and maintain our efforts to ensure the satisfaction of the cruise line and cruise passengers. We also need to continue our efforts to increase the tourism offer and further diversify our labour recruitment strategies in the tourism sector.

"Last May, we entrusted the tourism mandate to Baie-Comeau Cruises and the results are conclusive. We benefit from their expertise and the synergy of this team, which is also involved in our major attractions, such as the Glaciers’ Garden. Our solidified relationship with Tourisme Côte-Nord Manicouagan was necessary and also fruitful. At the moment, in our region, there is a great deal of enthusiasm on the part of all the economic players in order to develop the tourism offer as a whole. For the City of Baie-Comeau, developing the tourism offer is profitable for our attractions, our shops, our restaurants, our hotels... we cannot neglect it," said the mayor, Mr. Yves Montigny.
